How Cafe Kreyol is Transforming Coffee in Haiti
Bun Coffee has worked with direct trade specialists Cafe Kreyol in Virginia, USA, since early 2021.
Cafe Kreyol was founded on the following principles: -
* That irresponsible handouts are more damaging to people than helpful.
* That socially responsible business and conscious capitalism can help poverty-stricken areas far more than providing a single meal.
* That business provides economy. It provides hope.
Cafe Kreyol started using specialty-grade, organic coffee to create sustainable employment in Haiti. They believe that farmers should be paid based on the quality of their product and practice this belief by paying around 300% higher wages than Fair Trade requires.
What started in 2012 with just 200 producers has now expanded to 2,800 people across the country. But the mission goes beyond coffee, with a commitment to direct trade, innovation, and economic transformation, ensuring that every cup supports real change and independence in Haitian communities.

Brewing Economic Growth, One Coffee Plant at a Time
Haiti has a deep-rooted coffee history dating back over 250 years. However, economic and political instability and a lack of infrastructure have made it difficult for farmers to thrive. Through direct trade partnerships, Café Kreyol invest over $1 million annually in Haiti, paying farmers up to 300% above “fair trade” minimums to ensure sustainable livelihoods and a path to long-term prosperity.
Their Own-a-Tree Program allows farmers to revitalize their land with high-quality coffee plants — without needing financial capital or taking on upfront risks. For $180, a farmer can receive 100 coffee plants, grow them on their land, and repay the cost with the fruit of their first harvest — knowing they have a guaranteed buyer in us, year after year.
